Cash Strapped: Art and Arcana for Dungeons and Dragons

The art book "Art and Arcana" for Dungeons and Dragons is now on a huge sale. Only 9 bucks (despite what the picture link says) for what was once a 50 dollar book. It's hefty tome that looks at the artwork, products and designs for Dungeons and Dragons over it's lifetime. Well worth it for any fantasy gaming fan.

EDIT: Well the big sale is done but the book is still up at like 50 percent off.

Six Pack: Dirty Magic Items 2

Several years ago (2014 to be exact) I put out a 'six pack' of magic items that were of an adult nature. So I've decided to dig through some various scraps and notes from either games I've ran or ideas I jotted down to present another set of six.

So if you liked this and want to see more please share it around and let me know (like in the comments section). If you really liked it you can always buy me a Ko-Fi over on the right side of this blog or look at other options in the 'Support this Blog' tab at the top.

Please be warned, these are of an adult nature.

Six Pack: Dirty Magic Items 2

Collars of Devotion

A set of five black leather collars and a silver ring. Whoever wears the ring (the controller) can concentrate and feel wherever anyone who is wearing one of the collars (the thralls) is and what they are doing. If a thrall is having sexual intercourse with another person the controller can pull magic points from their partner and into the collar to collect for themselves at a later date. Whenever the controller touches a thrall they can drain the points into the ring which doubles as a magic soak. If the controller has intercourse with one of the thralls then when that person reaches climax the controller can pull all the magical energy from them into the ring. However doing this will leave the thrall unconscious for the next 8 hours. The thralls also feels the urge to obey anything the controller commands, and fall into a state of euphoric bliss when they are in their presence.

Rear Vision

This is a normal looking large metal buttplug with an end that is jeweled to look like an eye. Despite the appearance it does not trip metal detectors or show up on full body scans. When a person puts the plug into another persons anus they can utter a command phrase. Afterwards anything the plugged person sees or hears will be heard by the person placing it there if they are in a quiet room and concentrate. A person 'wearing' the plug cannot remove it of their own accord. If the plug is removed for any reason the connection is lost.

Boots of Dominus Maximus

This is a pair of thigh high black leather 'stripper' boots fitted for a person of feminine form. Anyone who comes into view of the wearer is dumbstruck in is filled with a sense of awe. The wearer has increases to their intimidation, seduction and interrogation type skills. The longer a person stays around the wearer the more under their influence they come and susceptible to the demands that are given to them.

Anklet of Attentions

A silver anklet with a charm that appears to be a broken heart mended back together with a line of gold. The person intending to wear this will hold it in their hands and whisper their desired traits in a sexual partner. This includes, gender, sexuality, kinks, appearance, anything they are looking for. Then they put the anklet on and go out and about their business. Anyone matching those traits will feel drawn to the person wearing the anklet and have a desire to talk to them.

Mirrorshades of Perverse Reflection

What appears to be a pair of simple round mirror lensed sunglasses. However inspection shows several almost microscopic runes written on the inside of the lenses. Whenever the wearer looks directly at a target and utters the activation phrase “your darkest” the traget then sees the wearer as their most idea sexual partner for their deepest repressed perversions and kinks. This isn't limited to sound either they also hear the wearer in the same way.

The Wolf Suit

A full black leather gimp suit with a dog mask, buttplug tail and paw gloves and boots. Once someone is completely strapped into this the person (the owner) who helped then get into it gives an activation phrase “beast released”. When that happens the person and the suit are transformed into a very large black wolf. The new wolf now has lower than human mental capacity but is completely loyal to the owner and their commands. A phrase “beast dismissed” will turn them and the suit back to normal. Also if they are killed they will return to their original form as well.

Gone Fishing part 2

Let's take another look at the difficulty number on fishing holes.

As was pointed out by Kyrinn S. Eis there needs to be some sort of meaning between the different ranges of difficulty. Otherwise who wouldn't just spend all their time at a level 5 hole and never bother with any of the tougher ones.

Area and opportunity. Some places just may not have a good place to fish. Going across a wretched land may provide very few spots and they may be hard to get anything out of. So all you may come across is level 20 holes that produces very little. Also when going on an adventure you may not get a choice of where to fish along the way. That great place where they are jumping the kobolds may be camped out around.

Another factor to show the difference may be in the quality of fish. That hole with a difficulty of 5 may produce nothing but Perch and Bluegill all day long, maybe a rare bass from time to time. While that hole up around the bend may be hard to fish out of but produces some of the biggest Catfish anybody has ever seen. You could also put some high end fish in the harder places as well or even some that are spell components or magical in nature.

Finally one more reason to make the difficulty of a fishing hole important is to increase your skill. You can only increase your skill at a hole that has a difficulty than your skill level. So if you get to level 5 in your fishing skill you will have to leave that easy fishing hole and go someplace tougher to get better. This could also lead to some adventuring just to get some time at those hard to fish from holes that may be rare.

Next installment I'll try to get a few sample Fishing Holes written up.

You can find the first part of Gone Fishing RIGHT HERE, or you could click on the 'fishing' label attached to this post to find it.

So if you liked this and want to see it expanded upon with more details please share it around and let me know (like in the comments section). If you really liked it you can always buy me a Ko-Fi over on the right side of this blog or look at other options in the 'Support this Blog' tab at the top.

Fishing minigame

One thing we see in so many video games out there is a fishing minigame dropped into a regular (usually fantasy) game. Even if what the game is about has nothing to do with fishing there are so many that offer up a chance to toss a line into the water to catch something. So why not do that with tabletop roleplaying games for something a little different.

So I present to you the very rough, very unplaytested, Truly Rural Publishing Fishing Minigame Rules. These may change, they get all sorts of changed, none of the fish charts are all encompassing. Hell I may never work on it again, who knows?

The fishing rules revolve around a single D20 roll. You add your fishing skill + any bonuses + die roll and beat the target number of the fishing hole. The amount over the target number you roll determines what kind of fish you catch from the chart for the fishing hole.

A characters fishing skill starts off at level 0 and can go all the way up to 20. To raise your skill level you must spend a total number of days fishing equal to the next skill level. So to go from level 0 to 1 you must spend 24 hours of time fishing while going from level 1 to 2 will take 2 days or 48 hours. Keep track of your fishing time. The fishing hole determines how much time it takes to catch a fish.

Bonuses are from gear or magical items. Common gear bonuses are +1 for decent fishing gear, +2 for top of the line gear. Magical Items and specialized gear will be listed in the next (hopefully) instalment of these rules.

The Fishing Hole stats. A fishing hole has a target number that must be beat. As a rule the less likely one is to catch a fish from a fishing hole the higher it's target number. So a hole with a target number of 5 is easy to catch fish out of. The number then goes up by fives (5, 10, 15, 20) as the more difficult it is to catch a fish. The amount of hours needed to catch a fish is determined by dividing the difficulty by 5. So a difficulty 15 fishing hole may take up to 3 hours to catch a fish. There just aren't many there. Specialized gear (again forthcoming) can reduce that time.

Finally I have up one chart for freshwater fish that can be caught. This is a very basic list and each fishing hole could have their own custom tailored list with as many or as few types of fish in that location. I'll be doing more details on to this in the future.... if people are interested. Here is the basic list, the number on the left is how much you beat the target number by and the fish you caught is on the right.

1-2      Crappie

2-4      Bluegill

5-6      Perch

7-8      Large Mouth Bass

9-10    Rainbow Trout

11-12  Striped Bass

13-14  Catfish

15-16  Flathead Catfish

17-18  Walleye

19-20  Salmon

So if you liked this and want to see it expanded upon with more details please share it around and let me know (like in the comments section). If you really liked it you can always buy me a Ko-Fi over on the right side of this blog or look at other options in the 'Support this Blog' tab at the top.

Part Two can be found RIGHT HERE. Or you can look at the labels on this post and click on 'fishing' to find it and future installments.

Happy Fishing.

Artic goggles

Saw this floating around on Facebook. You can damn well bet the next time I run a game in an artic setting these will be in there. Most likely with a few of them having magical abilities.

In the comments section let me know what kind of magic you think these would have.

Members of the Guard basic setting overview

Members of the Guard

Setting overview

The setting is that of a fantasy world where humans are the only dominant race. There are no elves, dwarfs or anything like that. Most of the land that the PC's will be in is part of a sprawling kingdom under religious rule. Their main mission will be to travel among townships and cities fighting back against the very real demons that exist and their influence among the populace. These traveling protectors are known as the Guard to most common folk and as Chevaliers by the more educated.

At the base level the Guard are made up of three general types of members. The Cavaliers, who are those skilled mainly in fighting. They make up the bulk of the members. Then there the Clerics, who are gifted in the ability to perform minor graces of God. They are also skilled in fighting as well but not as much as the Cavaliers. Then there are the Priests, the ones who are the most knowledgeable of the faith and can perform powerful graces. Most characters will be either Cavaliers or Clerics as most Priests are NPC's that may be in charge of multiple groups of the Guard. Basically they are the ones giving the orders such as “Go to this town and find out why their crops are being blighted”.

More on the basic world. The entire kingdom is ruled by the church, there is no other secondary form of municipality. Everything major decision is made by them and carried out by their devoted followers. The next closest thing is the various guilds sat up among the merchant and artisan classes of the society. While they have no actual say in governance they can attempt to sway their local leaders or attempt to set the markets how they want. Land ownership is a very gray area, all the farmland is owned by the church and the workers are given a very basic rate of payment for their work. While individual homes and businesses are considered to be owned by specific people. However at anytime a high ranking church member can order the property to be seized with very little the occupants can do about it.

I'll flesh out the details more as I go along in future posts.

Jaded Gamer - Cyberpunk RED

Well Cyberpunk RED is finally out in digital with the print book available within a few days afterwards. Happy to see it finally arrive although I'm going to have to give the game a pass. I've been a big fan of Cyberpunk in both the original 2013 and 2020 releases and still have a large collection of books from that series. But I feel that I am no longer part of the target audience for the game anymore.

More and more it feels like they are going after the folks who are heavy con goers, the ones who run big podcasting set ups and those who broadcast live streams. Which I can't blame them that's where the money is. But when I saw them giving the discounts to the people who have plenty of extra spending cash at cons but not to any of those who can't afford that it made me step back. The jumpstart kit, when purchased at the con, had a discount for the pdf and free downloads for music. Not to mention convention only special dice and other swag that were also available just at the con. Those of us who are tight on cash and can't afford trips like that were left out.

Being a cash strapped gamer has really been a bitch these last two years. With people blaming those of us with shallow pockets for piracy and all sorts of other nonsense. Shaming us when we say something is out of our price range. Hell I got outright dog piled when I said Invisible Sun was to expensive for my budget. They scream at us about how much it costs to make the product but mother fuckers can't get grasp the base concept that if the money isn't in my wallet then I can't spend it.

Then we saw folks going up against those who offered free or cheap product. They were shamed and blamed for bringing down the ability for others to make money in the tabletop roleplaying game market. Several folks who supposedly promote inclusiveness were quick to jump on this bandwagon. Those who shouted against gatekeeping were setting up their own gates to keep people out if they didn't pass the income barrier.

So I'm out. I'm done. They can offer the discounts to the people with all the extra cash to spend. While I'll set over here and stop getting excited about any release what so ever. I'll make my own little products and offer them up cheap so others like me can afford them.

Cash Strapped - DnD 5th edition

Time for a Cash Strapped post folks. For this one I'm linking to a hell of a good deal for those who are interested in picking up Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition for a nice discounted price. Oh and what a deal it is.

The three core books with special edition foil covers, a DM screen and a slipcase to hold them. For a lot less than the three core books by themselves. This special slip case edition comes in at almost 78 bucks off the regular price. Can't beat that with a stick.

Get this deal over at Amazon before it's gone. Oh and yes I do get a little kickback if you buy it through this link.

Vampire the Masquerade Winter's Teeth issue 3 review

Winters Teeth

Issue 3

Vault Comics

Pick it up on DrivethruComics

Pick it up on Amazon

Pick it up on Ebay

This issue hits the stand with quite a bit of action between the covers. The story picks up with Cecily's investigation into the slaughter of the Nosferatu that occurred last issue. Showcasing the brutality of what happened while bringing along her Ali whom she is still declaring as her childe. We get to see some build up, some story stings coming together and even a fight with the surreal looking bad guys who did the massacre. Don't get attached to anyone by the way. Also we discover something bad has happened to Prince Samantha while all this was going on.

The Anarch Tales secondary storyline also picks up quite a bit. We get a bit more details on one of the group members and their motivations. Then their escape from the hunters which captured most of them last issue. So it's going together nicely as well. Still wondering if this will tie into the main story or not.

In the back we get more material for the roleplaying game. Information for the Wolves in Sheeps clothing bad guys, some new powers and another group of villains called the Nictuku.

The art continues to be at the same quality standard as the previous issues. I feel the writing is maybe a little bit better than the first two issues. Still giving us necessary details for the story without dumping a ton of setting information in order to do so.

So once again, two thumbs up and recommended for fans of the new and old versions of Vampire the Masquerade. Heck even those who are not fans may enjoy this story.

Narrative design - The Archer

Thinking along the lines of narrative game design elements and mixing a few in with a more traditional system for Kainis. One idea I've toyed around with is that each player has a number of 'Story Points' to spend on special abilities. These abilities are determined partially by a rough character class outline and the rest through choices made during character creation. Here are a few I came up with for The Archer.

First off The Archer does not keep track of arrow count unless the GM deems it necessary in a 'limited resources' type of game. So running out is something that needs to have impact in the game.

"My Last Shot" - This means The Archer is using their very last arrow on their character. Done at a time when it really needs to count. It results in gaining an improved chance of success and and improved amount of damage to the target. Cost: 1 point.

"Scrounging for Arrows" - Usable after The Archer runs out of arrows in one way or another. They spend a few rounds looking over the bodies of enemies or through a suitable location that may logically have a few laying around. For every story point spent they get a single arrow. Keep track of these because when they are used you have two choices. Use the arrow normally and you gain the story point back OR use the arrow with an increased chance to hit and you lose the story point you spent for that arrow.

"For your consideration" - This is done to perform a trick shot in a non-combat situation. By spending one point you automatically succeed in making a simple trick shot while not under any sort of duress.

"Using what is at hand" - Used during close combat where ranged attacks aren't very feasible. The Archer is able to use an arrow as a stabbing weapon using their ranged attack skill although the damage is half of a normal arrow hit. Cost: 1 point.

The ritual of chosen traits.

The Ritual Of Chosen Traits

This is a ritual that allows the caster to choose specific physical traits for the child within their womb. Each drop of blood they shed at the end allows them to make one choice, however each one reduces their chance of surviving the childbirth. The only thing that can not be requested is the gender of the child.

The ritual must take place in a private wooded area after a fresh snow has fallen on the ground. No other person may have walked through the snowfall around her before the ritual begins. The caster must wear the cloak of the cabal that taught her the necessary magic and nothing more. While kneeling in the snow she must recite her ancestors names going back three generations and praising each one for their achievements. Then calling upon Astoria the Goddess of Life for the permission to grant her child the traits that are desired. While bargaining with Aedarius the God of Death for what may be the cost of these traits. The calling out takes about fifteen minutes and must not be interrupted.

Then the caster pulls out the dagger that is to be used for cutting the umbilical cord and drives it into the ground before her. If it falls over immediately the offspring is to be a girl, if it sinks into the ground it will be a boy. Next she must slice the tip of a finger for each trait bargained for. Letting the blood from each to fall into the snow. She then thanks the Goddess and God for listening to her request, cleans the blade and leaves the area where the ritual was performed.

The caster does not know if the ritual was successful only the birth of the child and it's growth will tell. Also she doesn't know if the God of Death will take her during childbirth or not. But the less that is asked the more likely she is to survive.

Inspired by the origin of Snow White in the original Bothers Grimm story.

Games you keep on your shelf.

Games that I keep pulling off my shelf and looking at. Some of these I haven't played in years but they always get me thinking. Reply in the comments on some of the games that you keep on your shelf even though they may not be the game you are running or playing anymore.

Psi World

Find it on DrivethruRPG or Ebay

Released by Fantasy Games Unlimited back in the day. The setting is a near future slightly alternate reality where there are people with psionic powers. Of course those with the powers aren't generally thought of to well by the non-psychic public. Also of course you play the psychics.

Featuring a game system that has some of that eighties crunch but is way simpler than FGU's game Aftermath. It works well with a few rough spots that could be ironed out. But the psychic power list is absolutely great and even with that crunch the way they work is even better. This is one of those games I keep wanting to run again but never do. But whenever I think of psychics in other games it comes off the shelf to use as reference.

Rolemaster

Find it on DrivethruRPG or Ebay or even on Amazon

Never ran a game of Rolemaster and probably never will. As a player, however, I love this system. All the tweaking, changes and adjustments you can do with your character. The freaking crit and fumble charts, oh those are golden, absolute golden. The spell lists that go on for days on end while getting insanely specific at the same time. The Shadow World setting that goes along with it is also amazing.

Would play in another game of Rolemaster in a heartbeat. But it makes for some good inspiration for my own homebrew fantasy stuff. So much to steal from and rework.

Conspiracy X

Find it on DrivethruRPG or Ebay or even Amazon.

1st edition, all the way, it lost something with the 2nd edition. Not due to the writing but I think it had to do more with the system change, artwork update and just general different approach and layout. But the original with that quirky system that works even though sometimes I don't understand how. But the system for developing a cell and resource management within that cell is sweet. The psionic abilities that are built around using Zen cards is inspired (I have a thing for psionics apparently). This is pure inspiration for modern day X-Files type stuff all the way up to cyberpunk type games with team management.

Now as I said I prefer the original version. However, 2nd edition does have the cell creation and zen card psionics as well. So if anybody is reading this and has an interest in those two things you can get which ever one you want.

Rapture the Second Coming

Find it on DrivethruRPG (D20 version only) or Ebay

Again, the original version from Quintessential Studios and not the later D20 version. This is the horror game that makes nearly every other horror game look like a walk in the park. It's the end times, a complete no win situation and it's all about trying to do the right things in a world that is on it's way out. They pull no punches, it's a fucking nightmare setting and the characters are right in the damned middle of it fighting against all odds in a war that is already over.

I absolutely love it. Well to read it, and steal from it and to think about running it. But I have never had a group that I think would either handle it or take it serious enough. There are no more souls left for newborn babies so those born now are possessed by demons. Wars are waging grinding the population into the ground. Starvation is rampant and much of the food is either tainted, maybe even poisoned. The police have been replaced by straight up death squads. Those of religious faith are hunted and killed. It's hell on earth and you have to fight through it because doing otherwise is letting evil win without a fight.

Vibes (1988)

Vibes (1988)

Buy it on Amazon

Watch it on Amazon

Buy it on Ebay

Let's go digging into the eighties again. I mean why not there were so many movies made that decade that it's a smorgasbord of good, bad and ugly. This time we hit the late eighties for a flick that most people missed. Vibes.

First things first, this movie was a huge flop. Like a belly flop at the Olympics type of flop. With a budget estimated around 18 million it brought in less than 2 million. So this was at the theaters and then gone so fast that most folks probably didn't even notice it was on in the first place. With that kind of crash it most likely didn't get much fanfare when it hit the rental market either. To be honest I never heard of it until a friend and I caught it cable several years back.

Now onto the plot. The movie is about a two psychics who are talked into a trip to Ecuador to help allegedly help a person find his son who is lost in the mountains. Turns out to be a con and they were actually brought there to help find a mysterious and dangerous treasure. But they aren't the only ones who are after this treasure.

Sounds like a bit of okay fun. But then we get to the casting, and it's the kicker. They psychics are played by Jeff Goldblum and Cyndi Lauper, yes that Cyndi Lauper. The person who conned them into the job is played by Peter “hey look it's Columbo” Falk. We even get a couple minutes of Steve Buscemi tossed in there for good fun. Plus a few others who are “Hey it's that guy.” actors from the 80's. So the casting is actually both solid and fun. Heck Cyndi turns out to be much better than I expected.

Special effects were decent for the era. A lot of on location filming was done and looks nice but nothing spectacular. Some of the dialogue is painfully from the 80's and wants to make sure you know it. Music is done by James Horner, another unexpected gem for this movie, and it fits. So there isn't a whole lot of failings going on for this movie. But there isn't anything that adds up to a blockbuster either.

In the end this movie sort of falls right into the “Okay” of movie ratings. It's not going to set the world on fire and your not missing anything if you don't watch it. But it's a decent little romp mixing comedy, supernatural and adventure all together. A solidly decent movie from a decade that brought a huge swath of terrible films. I would recommend that people at least give it a viewing but it's nothing to rush out for.

"Look at you, you got some of the flop on your sleeve!"

Vampire the Masquerade Winters Teeth issue 2 review

Vampire the Masquerade: Winters Teeth issue 2 from Vault Comics

Find it at DrivethruComics.

Find it on Amazon.

Or find it at your local comic shop.

This issue starts off by finally giving us Prince Samantha and some insight into her past and the way she thinks now. While at an event Cecily brings forth Alejandra with the claim that she is her progeny. For those unfamiliar with the setting it's given some discourse so you will not be lost. Actually they do this quite well through out the issue with discussions of the hunger, hunting and other such topics. I will say I am impressed with how they are handling giving readers all this information. It's done in a way where it is well written so any fans of the game already don't feel bored and those new to all this aren't completely lost.

There is not so much about Colleen and her crew, a little backstory and then running into something really bad. I'm not so sure about them being major characters in the story now. Maybe even just collateral damage but we will see with the next issue or two of this series. There have been at least four issues announced so far.

All in all the writing is pretty good. The story gets a bit wobbly with some "before" scenes but it recovers nicely. The characters do come across as different and three dimensional instead of just card board cut out vampire templates. The art is the same as last issue, maybe even a little improved. Thankfully there is a bit more color being splashed around this time so not everything looks like it's coated in mud.

The game material in this issue is giving some more information on Minneapolis and St. Paul. Including what information characters may know based on their knowledge of the sister cities. Then a two page character sheet is also included. Having not read the newest edition of Vampire The Masquerade I'm not sure if this is improved or just of a different layout. But it does look nice.

Jaded Gamer - JK Rowling and Harry Potter

Going to talk about something other than gaming right now. But it's something that many gamers are talking about.

Well you would have to be living under a rock if you haven't heard of the controversy surrounding Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Her blatant support of transphobic individuals online coupled with her own antitrans views she has spouted online and in other places. May are understandably writing her off and will no longer support anything with her name attached to it. I completely support a persons decision to do this.

What I want to talk about is people who are saying they are going to be destroying their copies of the Harry Potter books. What I ask of you is to not do this and instead do something that will affect her ability to profit off the material in the future. Donate them to thrift stores, sell them online via Ebay for cheap prices, drop them off at used book stores. Because whether you like it or not in the years to come some folks are going to want to read the books. Maybe because they saw the movies in reruns on television or maybe even because of the controversy. Make it easy for those folks to get cheap second hand copies. That way the demand for new print runs drop, thrift stores and used book stores get money they need and if you go the route of Ebay you get a little money in your pocket.

All without her ability to profit from any of those sales.

Make her books more common at yard sales and second hand markets than Fifty Shades of Grey (which I see every damn where). Do this so there is less and less demand for some new special covered copy being released at Wal-Mart when those who are curious can pick up a copy for fifty cents.

On top of all of his I also just hate seeing books getting destroyed. Being one of those people who still hasn't switched over to Kindle to read everything it just sort of irks me even if the person who wrote the books is craptacular.

Okay I'm off my soap box now.

Jaded Gamer - Adamant, Far West and Star System

Recently Adamant Entertainment put a new product out on the market called "Star System: Every Star Is A Destination". Which of course sparked up a few folks who are still waiting Gareth to release "Far West" which is years late with a stream of constant excuses and long moments of silence. Although some folks are noticing the pricing of the new product.

The pdf is the exact same cost as the pod version. Also if you buy the physical copy you get the pdf for free. Now this is a slap in the face to those who do digital only or live in areas where shipping costs can be far more than the actual book itself. So people started questioning this. First Gareth gives his usual smug remarks (even though he denies they were smug) and the other person working with Adamant to put this book out made an interesting comment.

So it appears that Eric Trautmann had to pay forward the entire cost of producing the book. Not Adamant or Gareth, but by himself. Which makes you wonder a whole lot about the fiscal stability of Adamant to produce finished product. Especially one that has been stuck in development of one sort or another for many years. One could very easily assume that by now the money that backers paid is long since gone. Things like shirts and all the extras will likely never see the light of day. Even the production of a physical books in enough copies to fulfill the backer orders seems extremely unlikely at this point.

So I guess folks can just keep counting the years on Far West which is becoming a piece of RPG Vaporware history.

Stuff for sale

Due to financial issues I'm selling off a good chunk of my gaming material I have gathered over the years. Along with some DVDs, books and other random items. Artesia on sale

Artesia is one of my all time favorite comics. The ttrpg released for it was equally stunning. I wrote about it before on an old blog post. Right now the publisher has put it on sale over on DrivethruRPG and it's worth checking out at this discount. Especially the graphic novels, they not only have great art but it's a showcase of how to do proper storytelling as well.

Click here to check the sale on Artesia right now.

For a print copy of the RPG you can try Ebay or Amazon but prices can vary wildly.

For a print copy of the comics, same deal Ebay or Amazon but watch those prices.

Unknown Armies 2nd ed vs 3rd ed

Been a while since I've talked about Unknown Armies. Especially after I was unhappy with the high buy in cost for third edition by splitting it into three books. So I didn't back the kickstarter and didn't look around for the books.

Eventually a collection of the three main books fell into my lap via a good trade deal. Really it was one I couldn't pass up. So I finally had the new version of Unknown Armies in my hands and I gave it a read through. After that I never mentioned it. Why? Because it was kind of a let down really. It didn't click at all with me, not the way the previous two edition did and it just felt like a whole lot of 'meh' to me.

Well over on rpgdotnet a conversation popped up where a person is reading the second edition of the game. A couple of us said we preferred it over 3rd and one person in particular (Comrade Pointdexter) hit the nail right on the head as to why. Saying it much better than I ever could have.

There are things I'll ransack from UA 3E (such as The Naked Goddess archetype, the schism in her cult, and Ordo Corpulentis), but I stick with 2E. Not only because I like that system better, but the overall tone of 3E strikes me as merely bizarro and kooky than uncanny, dark, and noirish. I recall one reviewer of third edition wrote that he wouldn't have guessed it was a horror rpg if the rule books hadn't said so. If 2E was Tim Powers, Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, James Ellroy, and Nick Cave then 3E is The Adventures of Pete and Pete and Ween (and, Christ, what they did to The Sleepers is a joke. Literally, a setting meta-joke. No 12-Step Sleepers in my UA, thanks). Take the 1st edition supplement Postmodern Magick and compare two of the individuals/cabals within - The Bad Man and Team Salvation. Second edition was all about characters like The Bad Man; third edition is totally Team Salvation. And I never could stand Team Salvation.

I have to agree completely with this. It's not a horror game in the way it's been rewritten. The updates to the power groups in the game aren't all that well thought out. It just doesn't work or compare to the previous edition. For the record 2nd edition took everything that was good about the original version, and several of the supplements, combined and refined them in probably the best follow up edition to a game that I have ever seen. It kept the tone and feel while making it all work together.

If you're looking for the 3rd edition you can find it on the Atlas Games page on DrivethruRPG and on Amazon of course or even Ebay. Don't forget to check your FLGS first though.

For 2nd edition you are going to have to hunt around on Ebay, on Amazon, or through second hand sellers. Or you may get lucky and find it at a FLGS also, be sure to check the used games section if they have one. UPDATE: You can now pick up first edition and second edition over on DrivethruRPG.

Truly Rural update 8-17-29

Truly Rural Productions update. While I'm waiting for a piece of art for Clandestine Societies I've started pushing forward on a second project.

A few years back I did a 'roll 20' post with twenty different kinds of masks you could find in a game. I've decided to take that list and expand each entry with a description of each mask, how their magical ability works in more detail, duration or uses and some notes on converting it over to a game system. Thought about stating it out with WaRP but I'm not sure if anchoring it with a system helps or hinders potential sales.

Also since 'Squad Names' sold a few copies I've started tossing together a second edition of that. No idea when it will be done as I'm just jotting down names as inspiration strikes.

After Clandestine Society and the as of yet untitled Mask project I will start working on another installment for Sponsorship.

Kung Fu and Titties (2013)

Sometimes when you review a movie you are taking a bullet for somebody else. Stepping in line to stop something terrible from happening to others. Tonight my wife and I have done just that. So please heed our warning when we say not to watch this movie. If only we would have been warned ourselves. The movie is...

Kung Fu and Titties

And yes, you can buy it at Amazon.

My wife and I were searching through the Roku looking for bad Kung-fu movies to watch at some point. Then over in the suggestions it appeared. The name that made us both go what the hell. We had to click on it just to see if was an actual movie listing. It was and we both laughed, then for some damned reason we said 'what the hell' and loaded it up.

It's really hard to classify this as a movie and more like glorified handicam filming. The plot itself was just as bad. A man named Richard Titties must travel to another dimension to rescue his girlfriend from a breast obsessed madman. No, I'm not joking, that's the plot. I would like to say there was some interesting bits in the movie, that somewhere there is something actually good buried in all of the badly filmed mess, but if I said that I would be telling a lie.

Of course the question everyone wants to know, “are there titties in the movie?”. Yes, you wonderful one handed remote control holders there are. There are a lot of titties in this movie, along with some ass and some guys ball sack. But having grown up on direct to VHS movies in the 90's and being an early entry internet nerd I have seen titties for a long time. It's not worth watching this to see them, just hop on google and find some instead. Trust me your brain will thank you later.

So throughout this 'film' my wife kept looking over at me and asking “what the hell?” and all I could do was shake my head and shrug. Afterwards I was at least able to point towards my rack of movies and proclaim that in comparison everything that I own is of the highest quality movie making skill. I have Zardoz on that rack and this makes it look good. Think about that for a moment.

So if you listen to any review of mine ever then listen to this one. Avoid Kung-Fu and Titties at all costs.

"Somehow I managed to keep my titties covered throughout the movie!"

The Running Man (1987)

The Running Man

Watch it on Amazon.
Watch it on Prime.

Oh how I do love me some eighties movies. Especially when they do something in the future and the timeline has caught up to them. The Running Man is supposed to take place in the years 2017 – 2019 which, honestly, may not be to far off from being reality. However I do feel that this movie has aged well although our technology has surpassed that displayed in the film. But the media obsession of the populace is pretty much hitting the nail on the head. At least we don't have folks running around wearing bell bottoms like the do in 70's movies that were supposed to take place post 2000.

This movie is pretty much pure cyberpunk and for some reason that fact is over looked by a lot of folks. Nearly all the tropes are there, dystopic future, corporate/police state control, people fighting against that control, government controlled media, all that. The only things it's missing is cyberware and some form of netrunning (although we do have hackers). Seriously this looks like it could all take place twenty minutes into the future after Max Headroom.

The base plot is pretty straight forward. Framed police officer Ben Richards (played by the Arnold) escapes prison with some friends then is recaptures and thrown onto the reality show 'The Running Man' where the contestants are hunted down and killed on live television. Ben ends up helping some rebels who are attempting to fight back against the police state while trying to stay alive while 'stalkers' are hot on his tail.

Costumes and sets are well done and come across well with some of the stalkers having their own specialized hunting grounds that the contestants are corralled into. The set for the show, corporate offices and everything else comes across believable as well. Special effects are top notch for the time period with most of being traditional and only a few things added in like the lightening for one of the stalkers, some fireball effects and showing the television crew doing face overlays. Even the cast is great with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead doing the action star thing, Richard Dawson as the host is straight up perfect casting, Jesse Ventura and Jim Brown could have easily have been done wrong but were, again, perfect castings. We even get Mic Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac in here and doing well.

Where it falls down is the writing, okay to be honest mainly in the dialogue. There is way to much push to give the Ben Richards character all kinds of one liners simply because The Arnold is playing him. It really doesn't fit most of the time and falls flat considering the way they rounded out the rest of his character. It also doesn't help that most of those one liners are meant to be funny and simply aren't. There are points where exposition is needed but they front load it so hard that it seems awkward how it comes out. The story is good, but they really needed somebody to sharpen up what everybody is saying just a bit and toss the one line wonders into the trash.

In the end I fill this movie should be necessary watching for anyone wanting to run a cyberpunk game with massive amounts of media control going on. Like Max Headroom there is so much to peel off and use that it's a gold mine for ideas. From the massive amounts of betting that is going on based on who is going to die or get the first kill to the rebels trying to take over the airwaves. Anybody who likes some good science fiction should also sit down and give it a viewing as well. It's simply a good solid movie that will keep you entertained.

Vampire the Masquerade Winters Teeth review

Vampire the Masquerade

Winters Teeth issue 1

from Vault Comics

This issue is obviously the set up for the series. So be ready to go in with some expository dialogue explaining the world of V:TM for new readers. But, to their writers credit, they manage to keep it down to a minimum and only touching on what is necessary instead of feeding you everything at once.

The main characters we have so far are Cecily, a former Brujah Anarch, Colleen, a thin blooded Caitiff I think, and maybe Alejandra, just can't tell what she is going to be in the series yet. It sets up Cecily as a problem solver for the local prince of Minneapolis who is doing her job exceptionally well. We see how she is juggling the remnants of her pre-embraced life and her duty to her masters. Alejandra is newly embraced, confused and not what she seems and runs into Cecily as soon as she arrives in the city via train. While Colleen is caring for her own little vampire family adopting a mothering roll over them.

We don't really get an idea of where exactly everything is going but several plot directions are sat up. A vamp named Calder is warning Cecily of potential changes and strife that may be coming to the city. Colleen and crew are hiring themselves out to do dirty work. Oh and we get a quick panel of what is probably some hunters as well. Plenty of direction to go.

All in all the writing is solid so far. The art is good, not exactly my preferred style but better than a lot of other indie comics out there. Honestly I think the coloring is actually the worse thing about this issue. Getting way to much of a muddy feel from the palette being used.

In the back is a section called 'Anarch Tales' which gives you 5th edition stats for some of the characters along with a bit more background on them. For those who run V:TM this could turn out to be a nice little wealth of NPC's to use in your games. Already fleshed out and ready to use.

I will be picking up the next issue without a doubt.
