Jaded Gamer - Know your history

One thing I can't stand is when people start talking about the history of the ttrpg hobby who don't actually have a fucking clue about it. I've ran into many folks who only been gaming for ten years or so who show up and act like they are the walking talking expert. Puking forward opinions that seem to be coming from popular streamers or influencers... who have only been gaming for the same amount of time or a few years longer.

Not to long ago I saw one person saying that there is no reason Traveller should ever be mentioned since it really wasn't the scifi defining ttrpg that people think it was. Really? It was the science fiction game for decades. Sure as shit wasn't Star Frontiers, a game that only lasted about maybe four years.

Because it's not making big splashes like it used to doesn't mean it wasn't ever anything. Besides that game still has a rather huge fanbase which you can see based on how well it sells and is supported. But they just aren't vocal youtubers and wannabe influencers. Hell I don't think I've ever seen a Traveller fan put up a video screaming mad about all the changes coming with the newest edition like DnD 'fans' do.

Another one that really gets me is when people say Vampire the Masquerade didn't have any real effect on the hobby. I was very active in the hobby when that game dropped. Attending conventions, playing different games, really deep diving as best one could back then. The internet wasn't even there yet, CERN hadn't placed the software into public domain yet. Contact through BBS set ups and Usenet was how people kept in contact.

What I saw and witnessed during that time was a massive amount of change. New folks pouring into the hobby, not old folks coming back, but new folks coming in. An entire subculture of club kids, goths and horror buffs. I will also mention that as a hormone fired up youth at the time seeing the amount of women coming into the hobby was a huge surprise (a very welcome surprise).

They tried to base the game more on the story than the system. By todays standards it's not that big of a push. But back then it was huge. There were a few games that tried but none of them made the attempt with as much success. In an era where things were getting more crunchy and more detailed when it comes to game systems they went the other direction. Plus they tried to make some of it more story and socially oriented. Also, bear in mind, the ultra rules light game Over The Edge didn't come out until the year after VtM.

There were months where White Wolf products out sold TSR products. People saw that success as well and took note. It became a reason why many folks started looking at making more games that lean towards story more than system. Paving the way for a lot of new games with a new style. The ripples of effect from that game are one of the big reasons why we have story games in such quantity now.

To say that game had no affect on the hobby is showing your ignorance of the history of the hobby. One day I need to make up a list of 'hobby changing moments'. Things like DnD 3.0 with the release of the SRD under the OGL, the influencergasm that came with DnD 5.0, Magic the Gathering disrupting damn near everything, stuff like that. You can damn well be sure that VtM would be on that list.

GROGNARDIA: Retrospective: Mage: The Ascension

GROGNARDIA: Retrospective: Mage: The Ascension: I know that, for some readers, White Wolf's World of Darkness games represent a definitive break with the early days of the hobby and, t...

Vaesen Starter Kit play review

This review is for the Vaesen Starter kit from Free League Publishing. Vaesen is a Nordic horror roleplaying game based off of the artwork of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans. It uses the Year Zero Engine that powers many of the Free League products.

You can pick up the physical starter kit at your friendly local game shop (like the one I work at) and if they participate in the Bits n Mortar program you get the pdf for free.

If not you can pick up the physical copy over on Amazon while the pdf is available for purchase over on DrivethruRPG in the regular version or optimized for Roll 20 VTT

This review is based on actual play where I ran the starter set for a game group at my local shop. I was not gifted the kit for review but was actually purchased by myself.

Straight out of the production quality is top of the line. The box is very durable and strong, all the material inside is printed on quality stock. You get a set of ten dice, initiative cards, maps (of the mythic norse, the city and castle) and everything else you really need. Including rules summary hand outs that come in very handy at the table for the players. You get a condensed version of the rules in one booklet that is easy to navigate and the adventure itself in another. To go through this episode you have five pregenerated characters.

The adventure itself is pretty straightforward. You little group of 'Thursdays Children' (those who can see the Vaesen) are approached to investigate a castle formerly occupied by a group called the society. It has since fallen into massive disrepair and other Thursdays Children have been lured there and gone missing. Given the tools you need in the form of a booklet with information on many of the Vaesen types and a map they set off.

I will say the pregenerated characters all seem to fit really well. None of them fall into the fifth wheel problem I've seen with other starter kits. Each one has a purpose and comes in very handy at various times. Now a couple of them reference a few things that aren't discussed in this kit but nothing major that would ruin any sense of the game. Just had us flipping pages for a bit.

With the group I played with they figured out what the encounter was beforehand by using the booklet of Vaesen and grasping a few clues. But they also snagged onto a red herring that could have also been in there. So it's not one of those discover everything at the end kind of stories. The ended is open ended and can lead you straight into regular games using the full corebook.

The mechanics are easy as most Year Zero Engine games are. Roll a number of six sided dice, sixes count as successes. Most checks require only one or two successes. Various rules for pushing the rolls are there to help get you success at a cost. There are no hit points but a more narrative condition system which helps set the tone of the game even more.

Not to mention that the artwork is also immaculate. Every Vaesen product I have looked at has been beautiful and this one is no different.

In the end I give this starter set two thumbs up and highly recommend it to others.

UPDATE: Here is a Reddit Thread where a person running the starter kit asks a few questions and gets some really answers.

Getting ready to run Vaesen.

Well I've wrapped up my short four session stint back into my Cyberpunk 2020 campaign. Putting the Church of the Righteous Hand in a position to really alter the future of Night City if they choose to do so. But it will be a while before we get back to that. Most likely it's going to be a campaign I bring back a couple times a year for a few sessions.

So the next game I will be running is going to be Vaesen from Free League Publishing. Ever since I saw it on the shelves at my FLGS it had my interest. But it wasn't until I got to play in a game at DieCon last year that I finally decided to take the plunge and buy the game. But there's a lot to take in and I couldn't quite figure out where to start.

So finally they came out with a Starter Set and I picked that up.

Told my group I will be running the starter using the pregenerated characters. That way they get a feel for the system and setting a little bit before making their own characters. Then after that I'll be running the published adventures straight out of the various campaign books.

I'm excited to run it. My group is excited to play it. So it's going to be fun. If I can just finish wrapping my head around the starter kit by next Sunday.

Be A Better Player Updated

I updated 'Be A Better Player' just a bit. Added in some new pics and improved the layout a little. Put the 100% Human logo on the front as well as the copper medal the book has earned. It's over on DrivethruRPG and if you bought the original you can just download this version for free as I just added it to the original listing.

I should have a few more blog posts starting to roll out in this next week as we're finally done moving the FLGS that I work at. Along with some amazingly busy first days there. The move has been nothing but an improvement for Aesop's Treasury that's for sure.

Cyberpunk - Nicotine Injection Implant

Because every runner has their bad habits. So why not make those bad habits as cyber as possible?

Nicotine Injection Implant

A small circular implant that can be place nearly anywhere. Although most have it on their arms or abdomen. This implant has a shallow port that can be loaded with disposable nicotine ‘shots’. Once a shot is in place the implant releases it into your system be simply double tapping the top of the implant or via a signal.

The look of the port can vary. With the very basic level being a small plastic circle of whatever color you choose. Next up is one that blends in with your skin so it isn’t seen. After that you can go with various metals and designer looks. As with most things the more you spend the higher the quality.

The shots themselves also have some options. From cheap plastic capsules up to metal refillable or designer looks. You can also pay for different levels of nicotine concentration. Some backroom places offer shots loaded with other chemicals, usually illegal ones, that look like normal nicotine ones.

There is also nothing from stopping you from getting multiple implants so you can really get that fix when you need it.

Or you could just go totally retro and smoke cigarettes.

Magic Items - Automatic Candle Snuffers

Automatic candle snuffers. I didn't know these existed until a few years ago. They have been around for quite some time as well. So of course we need some of these with magical effects.

Automatic Candle Snuffers

1 – A sleep spell is cast when the candle is snuffed.

2 – Creates a sphere of silence when it closes that lasts for four hours.

3 – A one use snuffer that activates a fireball spell stored inside when it closes. Of course it destroys itself in the process.

4 – Causes all other flames within twenty feet to extinguish when it closes.

5 – When open and on a candle it slows the burning process and doubles the candles burn time.

6 – When on a burning candle it purifies the air in the room.

7 – When on a burning candle it causes the light to be twice as bright without making it burn faster.

8 – Causes the candle it is on to burn with a wonderful scent that calms anyone in the same room.

9 – When a person lights the candle it is on everyone in the room is suddenly enthralled and will listen to anything they have to say while it burns.

10 – Will cause the candle to emit a toxic gas when it’s burning.

Grave Robbers Inc

Grave Robbers Inc

Sometimes there are jobs that are necessary but are considered to unsavory for most people to do. One such job is exhuming the dead. Now there may be all sorts of reasons why you need a body dug up, ritual components, resurrection, feeding, whatever... but it's a dirty backbreaking job that just seems to have a bad taint about it. But there is a demand, so of course there are those willing to do the work. That's just what this little posse of losers has done. After being outcasts in a niche of society that is pretty much composed of outcasts these folks got together and carved out their own little pocket by doing what nobody else will do. No questions asked. For the right price.

Of course their prices aren't cheap but what's the alternative, doing it yourself? Nobody wants to do that. So as a base rate to pull a fresh body out of the ground and have it picked up at a location of their choosing you will pay an easy five grand. Add another grand for every week it's been buried. Add a grand if the customer chooses the pick up location. Tag on another two if they have to move the body from the transport and into a location. Just need specific parts of a body? Well that's a grand each.

These guys don't take plastic so be ready to pay cash in hand or bitcoin. On a very rare occasion they have been willing to do the deed for a trade. But whatever you are offering it had better be pretty valuable AND be something they really want.

One thing though, getting in touch with them isn't that tough. If you ask around the various occult circles enough you will hear about them and somebody will hand you a phone number. On the other end of that number will be the sweetest voice you’ve ever heard.

Significant NPC's

Tim Price, aka The Boss

Tim is from a long family line of morticians. He has all the education and apprenticeship necessary to follow that path as well. But he decided to spend some more time in college while chasing after lost bits of occult knowledge. While he possesses no magical or supernatural abilities himself he does know a great deal more than most others and has a nearly photographic memory to boot.

He's the one who started Grave Robbers Inc up. Having the know how and access to the equipment needed for the job put him in the position of being in charge.

Chrissy, aka The Voice

When you need to meet GRI to discuss business this is who you will talk to. All of five feet tall, dressed in black from head to toe with combat boots, she is the stereotype appearance of modern goth. Until she speaks. Her tone and inflection are perfect and anyone listening to her feels immediately at ease, calm and don't have an angry bone in their body. Some say she from a bloodline of muses, but nobody knows for sure. She may not even know herself.

Other members of the crew tend to vary. From a few outcasts just looking to earn some money on the side to jocks from the local college hoping to impress Chrissy. Just disposable guys to work the shovels and do the dirty work.

Artifacts of Note

Privacy Lantern. This appears to be an old turn of the century railway oil lantern. Very worn, dinged up and dented but still functional. When filled with oil, lit and a bit of magic is used it creates an optical illusion. Anything activity within the circle of light is rendered invisible from outside viewing. Used while digging up a grave so that casual passer by or a police patrol can't see the activity happening. This illusion is broken if the lantern is moved more than a few inches.

Piece of your Mind Pipe. This appears to be a long smoking pipe made to resemble a Native American 'peace pipe' or at least what they looked like on television. This is activated when a person loads the pipe up and lights then takes a puff while spending a bit of magic. Then when they hand it off to another and they take a hit that’s when the person who lit the thing says out a number of a days and the person will pass out. When they wake back up they will have forgotten most of the specified number of days. Only some very foggy and faint images will remain.

Story hooks.

If you have a group with player characters who are down on their luck and needing money well here is an option. Tim is always looking for a few good folks to do the heavy lifting. The more they know about the occult and supernatural goings on the more he’ll like them. So time to see if your players can handle a bit of graveyard desecration.

The Graverobbers have dug up the remains of somebody very important. Now there is a price on their head until the body is returned preferably intact. Maybe your group will be the ones hunting them down. Or maybe GRI is paying the characters to get the body back from the people who had them dig it up in the first place. Maybe they didn’t even dig it up in the first place and they are being framed.

Replicant Society Stress Triggers (old post)

How about a way back post. This is something that I originally posted fourteen years ago. Was working on a Blade Runner type of game called Replicant Society where the PC's where the replicants trying to survive and hide among the human population. I think somebody has already done something like that since then.

But still some of the ideas I had for stress triggers make me want to try and actually make a little mini game. Really rules light, more about handling stress and surviving in plain sight. Maybe one day. Anyways here's my original thoughts on the matter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been hashing out some ideas for a game based on Blade Runner and the novel it was adapted from 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. Currently it's called Replicant Society and the players will be the Androids. This first little bit I posted over on my G+ stream. Might as well do a repost here.

Here are some quick ideas on stress triggers and android model types. This is all just ideas I've been writing down over the last couple of days.

One thing that androids do not have is a lifetime of experience. This is especially true in the area of the minds ability to handle stressful situations. Thus it become necessary to track the various types of stress that they are especially vulnerable to. Now some model types are more resistant to various types of stress than others. Now let's look at the four key stress triggers.

Socialization – This is the ability to handle constant social interaction with a variety of people in multiple situations.

Sexual Contact – The intimacy of sexual contact with a living being.

Combat – This is one stress trigger that androids tend to share with their human counterparts.

Emotional Crests – Intense amounts of any specific emotion. Be it fear, happiness, love.

Now the various model types are listed below. Each has specific triggers that they are more resistant while others they seem more susceptible to.

Administration – Resistant to Socialization.
Pleasure – Resistant to Sexual Contact and Socialization. Susceptible to Combat.
Combat – Resistant to Combat and Emotional Crests. Susceptible to Sexual Contact and Socialization.
Caregiver – Resistant to Emotional Crests and Socialization. Susceptible to Combat.
Labor – Neutral regard with all triggers.
Entertainment – Resistant to Socialization. Susceptible to Combat.

Cyberpunk - Nano Handkerchief

Today I have a seemingly simple item that most higher up corporate folks wouldn't mind having in their pockets. It's always nice to have a health checkup whenever you need it.

The Nano Handkerchief

Really a corpo things, most base level runners couldn’t afford it or wouldn’t bother paying for something like this. It appears to be a regular cloth handkerchief with a variety of possible of fabric types or designs on it. But it’s laced through with nano sized scanners that are linked back to a network.

Whenever it comes into contact with bodily fluids like spit or phlegm (or whatever others) the nano goes to work analyzing it. Searching for germs, viruses, signs of sickness and all that. The result are then fed back to the network and then passed on to the owner. All within a few seconds. Giving them a possible heads up on an oncoming illness, or even toxic exposure.

At the end of each day they are placed in a ‘cleaner box’. It’s a flat thin box made in the dimensions of the handkerchief so that it can be laid out flat inside. Then it safely removes all contaminants overnight without damaging the nanotech laced into the fabric.

2026 Gaming Resolutions

Once again it's that time of the year. My new years gaming resolutions presented in six pack formula.

First lets look at last year (you can see the post HERE).

1 - Achieved although it morphed. See this years number 2.

2 - Achieved.

3 - Not so much. Got one thing out and just barely. And no playtesting on my own games. It stays the number 3 for this year.

4 - Didn't really happen. Had opportunity but other issues made it not happen.

5 - Achieved. Continuing that course.

6 - Somewhat achieved. Had off and on moments that's for sure. It's going to number 1 this year.

While I did decent with last years I didn't manage them all. But that's okay, it did help motivate me to get some stuff done. Here we are with the gaming resolutions for the new year.

1 - Keep updating my blog on a regular basis. At least two posts a week of some sort. Just sometimes hitting that wall really knocks me down. But this is what's helping me keep my mind off the dumpster fire of a world that is happening around me so I can have a few moments to breathe.

2 - My Tuesday night group fell apart when the time frame was no longer viable for me and a couple other players. But now a Sunday midday group has formed to take it's place. So I want to keep that going just like before. Currently I swap out GM duties with a friend each week.

3 - More releases for my Truly Rural Productions stuff on DrivethruRPG. I'm especially motivated to do this after getting my first medal for "Be A Better Player Vol One". Most will be collected material from my blog. Going to keep pushing it on Ko-Fi and itch as well even though nobody seems to buy my stuff from there. I'm also eyeballing the Year Zero Engine for doing a full game release at some point, but likely not in 2026. Of course this means facing my imposter syndrome head on more than ever before.

4 - Run a few other games than normal. First up is Vaesen at some point. Got everything I need but just need to get my butt in gear and do it. Really enjoyed playing it at DieCon this year and love the whole premise. Then I also want to run 1st ed Vampire the Masquerade, but I'm not sure everyone in my current group would like it.

5 - Continue building the little webpage I have going for the Sunday group. If it gets decent enough maybe I'll share it outside my little group of players. Maybe slowly work towards my friends homebrew system getting published at some point.

6 - Cull some of my gaming collection down. I really need to focus on what I am going to use, things with memories attached and stuff like that. So much of what is on my shelf will never be used nor do I have any really attachment to. Time to clear out some stuff and focus.

Be A Better Player hits DrivethruRPG Copper

After nearly eight years one of my products over on DrivethruRPG finally made a medal. Over the weekend somebody bought a copy of "Be A Better Player" that finally put it over the mark. It now has that copper best seller icon hanging on the page. I know this may not seem like a big deal to some folks but to me it is. A level of achievement showing that some of my work has paid off a little bit.

So hopefully I see another product reach that level at some point in the future.

Clandestine Societies is on DrivethruRPG

Okay so I tried something a bit different with this release. I put it up on my Kofi page first, then I put it on my itch io page a week later. This has resulted in, checks notes, zero sales. So now it's time to put it up on DrivethruRPG and see what happens.

So head on over there and check out Clandestine Societies Issue Two. It's a small collection of supernatural, horror and occult articles. Mostly system agnostic, but when mechanics are supplied it's done using the WaRP OGL from Atlas Games.  Hey it's only a buck so check it out if you don't mind.

Hopefully I'll have issue three ready to go here in a two to three months. I know I've got plenty of material to dig through to fill it up with.

Roll A D10 - Cyberpunk Jewelry

Fashion accessories will never go away, but they will change. What could we see in the cyberpunk future in this area. Well here's a list of ten possibilities.

Jewelry you would see.

1 – Custom made titanium dog tags with glowing letters and numbers.

2 – Bracelets made from gold plated motherboards and copper wiring. Sort of a circuitry filigree.

3 – Earrings that are also micro drives for quick data storage that people won’t notice.

4 – Lockets that only open with the proper person places their thumb on the lid.

5 – Clear tube wearables that glow and have multicolored liquid flowing through them.

6 – Metal rings that are able to expand or shrink slightly to fit different sized fingers.

7 – Pendants and earrings that display holographic corporate logos.

8 – Veils made of microthin webbing that distorts a persons features on security cameras.

9 – Mood Choker, normally a centimeter wide and black but changes color based off the wearers mood.

10 – Lips rings that cast a light into the wearers mouth making it light up when they speak.

Clandestine Societies Issue Two on KoFi and itch

Clandestine Societies my little ezine of supernatural, horror and occult gaming material finally has a second issue out. Issue two is now up and available on two storefronts.

First it's up on my Ko-Fi page available to supporting members for free. As well as several other pdfs should they choose to support me on that platform.

Second it's up over on itch io for only a buck. Most of my other products are available there as well.

Next Saturday I will be putting it up on DrivethruRPG.

Hoping to have a third issue out in the first quarter of 2026. If everything goes smoothly.

Cyberpunk - Club Zero

Club Zero

This is a club set up for a very specialized sort of clientele and not one for those who stray out of that narrow focus. It is designed from the ground up for Netrunners and only Netrunners. Thus in the end the look of the location in meatspace is nothing like that of a regular club that you would find in a major city.

Physical Location

The building was originally designed for an up and coming weapons design company called 'InLine Design' that went belly up when it's product designs were sniped and copied by several other major corporations. They had built their own onsite firing range and weapons testing facilities. This mean lots of heavy reinforced concrete walls, running through with re-bar, metal plates and even more concrete.

The entire parking lot is open and one can see various drones passing over head and those with a more keen eye can see automated weapons mounts in various places along the walls of the building. Any unwelcome visitors will be taken care of without question. The single entrance has a small led display above reading 'Club Zero'.

Upon entry you are greeted by two armed security personnel asking for your membership. If you do not have one you will be directed to a room with a sole laptop and card printer on a table. Membership costs 500 euro payable yearly and your card is printed off on site. If you aren't interested in a membership you are asked to leave.

Once your membership is verified you will be led down a series of hallway and through various scanners. All weapons, equipment and cyberdecks will have to be removed in placed in a steel lockbox before being allowed to continue on. Throughout this there are very visible cameras monitoring the area and several very obvious automated small arms weapon mounts. After you are deemed clean you are then led to what used to be the main firing range.

Inside are rows of recliners circling a massive rack of data terminals. Various other runners are jacked into cyberdecks built as part of the chairs. This is all connected to the single completely self contained network called 'ZeroSpace'. Only hard line log ins are available and the shielding of the room insures that any built in hardware inside a runner cannot send or receive an outside signal.

Some recliners are designated as long term units. So the runner can be fixed with a nutrient feed and be taken care of for a few days instead of just a few hours.

Inside ZeroSpace

First the runner enters their own personal ‘wardrobe’ area. Here they pick out an appearance for themselves. It’s all standard human fair with lots of 80’s and 90’s club fashions to pick from. Complete with an AI assistant who acts as an old school tailor making sure everything fits just right.

Then you step through a door into the club itself. Huge and sprawling with multiple levels. Each with it’s own style and music selection. Lots of private booths, arcade style games, video screens and holographic style displays. Filled with lots of people milling about, waitresses, bartenders, various dancers, and club goers. Most of these are AI constructs meant to give the feeling of a bustling busy club.

The runners themselves show up just a little bit clearer and brighter than the fake folks. So they can spot each other in the crowds. When privacy is needed the booths will seal off the outside environment and only those inside can see or hear what is going on. This is usually when information, data, programs, etc are often exchanged. Including a business card program that lets you exchange information into each other virtual Rolodex.

If the busy club scene gets to be a bit much there are also side rooms like private libraries, swimming pools and saunas, even bedrooms for those who like their romance to be virtual as well. Some runners can spend days in the club without leaving. Rumor has it the owner is a complete ‘Live In’ who never leaves the club, his body somewhere in the physical structure, hooked into machines to live.

Adventure Seeds

The most obvious use of the club in game is as a place for the netrunner of the group to meet contacts and friends. Exchanging information or getting that bit of code they need.

The club needs a problematic person taken care of. They have caused to much trouble inside the club and outside of it as well with regulars and patrons. So an example needs to be set. Your team is to eliminate the person in the most spectacular and painful way as possible.

A corporate feels the club is becoming a problem. They have a solution using nanobots. But they can only get so much in at a time. So they wish to hire the runner to enter the club various times each week while wearing a dusting of the special nanobots. Each time they are to choose a different recliner when they log in. Thus spreading the nano’s like an infection until there are enough inside to be activated.

Roll A D10 - Terrifying Photographs

Sometimes what you find on a persons phone can be shocking. Especially in a horror game. Here are ten things that you wouldn't want to find on a cellphone gallery.

Photographs found on a cellphone gallery.

1 – A person tied to a chair that is gagged and blindfolded.

2 – A dead body that has been split down the middle and laid open.

3 – A clawed hand reaching for the camera, the background is all dark and blurry.

4 – The inside of a mini-fridge filled with full blood donation bags.

5 – A body wrapped in rope frozen inside of a chunk of river ice.

6 – Several hooded figures around a table performing animal sacrifices.

7 – An image of the person who is looking at the phone taken from a distance.

8 – A spiked pit trap on what appears to be a nature trail.

9 – A wanted dangerous fugitive holding up their own ‘Wanted’ poster and smiling.

10 – Images from the inside of a church as it is burning.

Roll a D10 - Things in a dead persons hand

Time for another horror gaming entry for Roll a D10. This time it's what you may find when you search a dead body.

What did you find in a dead persons hand?

1 – A religious symbol for a nearby cult.

2 – A long flat head screwdriver covered in blood.

3 – The drivers license of a local police officer.

4 – Small scrap of crumbled paper with three phone numbers on it.

5 – A flashlight with dead batteries.

6 – A key ring with three keys on it.

7 – A leash for a small animal.

8 – A blood stained photograph of a young girl.

9 – Several strands of long hair wrapped around their fingers.

10 – A small crucifix on a silver chain.
